What is a good answer for "what is your weakness" in a job interview?

Saying that you're a "workaholic" is taboo and I've told some I'm "somewhat impatient at times"....I don't think that's going over well either. What do you think about saying..."I'm very competitive, although I'm not sure that would be considered a weakness or a strength....I just always try to do my best and strive to win and succeed at everything I do".??? I'll accept any ideas....have a phone interview in a few hours and another interview tomorrow and this question always comes up. Thanks for your thoughts!! Wish me luck!!!! I need a job!

PS - I'm applying for Executive Assistant positions....for which I have many years of experience.

I dont like any of those... and here is why...

When an interviewer asks you about your weaknesses, what they really want to know is that you recognize your not perfect. They dont want some stock nothing answer. They are trying to get a feel for who you are and why you are going to be a great new employee.

Basically they want to know if, when you make a mistake, you will self correct and recognize when you are the 'problem'.

Think about how you do things when you work. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

A good one that I have used is this....

My biggest weakness is that I am very creative, which makes me tend to overthink things to the point that I have to just stop and make a decision. I have really worked hard to stop doing this and I believe that I have managed to find a balance between the two. Now, I strive to give just enough thought to the task at hand to complete it, so that I can move on to the next one. With all my overthinking in the past, I learned to work well in a time crunch, but now enjoy knowing that I can construct a schedule in which I don't have to work at such a demanding pace.

What does this statement say to the employer?

    1. You learn from your mistakes.

    2. You have enough experience that you have learned valuable lessons about your self, and about working in general.

    3. You work well under pressure.

    4. You dont like to work under pressure and will strive to NOT let that happen in his/her workplace if they hire you.

    5. You are creative.

    6. You use your brain and will devote the time needed thinking about a project.

    7. You are decisive.

    8. You can carry a thought completely through to the end.

    9. You know how to be self critical, and self correcting.

    10. That you know how to make a schedule and stick to it.

The employer will walk away from that statement with a lot to think about.

3 Weaknesses For Job Interview Examples

  • 1 decade ago

For an EA position - a 'good' weakness is being extremely detail oriented. That can be a 'problem' when there are multiple #1 priorities and you are focused on one of the top priorities.

Now, how you cope with that weakness (the true insight to that crazy question) is that you regularly use lists, colors, or some other prioritization tool to help you allot the correct amount of time so that everything is done - completely and on-time.

    good luck

That would probably guarantee you a job around here. Lots of pirate activities in these waters, and ECU, home of the Pirates, is not too far from here. There's a million restaurants and shops with a pirate theme. There's even a pirate themed Chinese restaurant. Silly Asians.

That is always a hard question to answer. I always think of something that takes place out of the work area. I am very impatient I don't like waiting on people or anything. another one of my weaknesses is I am always early which is a good thing, but then I end up waiting on things to get rolling.

Good luck, you will be fine.

I usually like to say "my inability to say no to people." It's a good weakness. With anything that you do say, I recommend turning it around and explaining what you're doing to improve it. In the case of not being able to say NO to people, I begin by articulating how difficult it is for me to not want to help people out, but with doing so, I tend to have too much on my plate. I will end this conversation with saying that I am working on prioritizing and allowing others to seek my help and support instead of me doing the task for them!

    Hope this helps- good luck!

How about... I have none that I've noticed (with a laugh)

that way if you get the job and they notice a weakness well, its not like you notice it :P
