How should I clean Afghans?
I recieved a bunch of crochet afghans for my son when he was born. How should I wash them? Should I use a special detergant for them. He is a year old now so it doesn't have to be a baby detergant.
I havn't even let my son use them yet. I'm too afraid he is going to rip them apart.
Should I use a gentle cycle?

Any crocheted item made of acrylic or cotton yarn can be washed in the washing machine. I wash my afghans on a gentle cycle.
You can tumble dry and hang to dry the remainder.
If you have an extremely delicate item or an item that has a loose piece of yarn, you need to take extra care that it doesn't unravel (either by handwashing or having it dry cleaned.)
Just an FYI, if you ever inherit a vintage crocheted item, I recommend using Euclean wash. I've used this product to clean a doily my great-grandmother made, and I was really impressed with the results.

It helps to know what they're made of. They're probably polyester or acrylic yarns. In that case, machine wash warm, gentle cycle will be fine. Woolite is great, or just some kind of faily mild laundry soap. Dry them briefly on very low heat. Take them out of dryer while still damp and hang them up or lay them out.
If any of them are wool yarn, those would need to be professionally cleaned.

Wash them on gentle cycle with Woolite or Ivory soap detergent. Hang dry so they will not shrink or create any fuzz.

They can be washed in warm water and use fabric softener if you like. They should be washed regularly.
