I have a friend who put me down as a reference for a job where I am working.?

I was told today they are going to offer him a position at the company, if he completes his 4 weeks of training I will get a bonus of $250. Is it proper or expected of me to share some of that with him for putting my name down?

No, you are not obligated to give him anything. It would be consider bad form if you did. It is a precedent that should not be started.

No you do not need to feel that you owe him anything. Heck you are one of if not the reason he now has a job. He can make his own money in his new job. If you want to be nice offer to give him say 50 of it. That way you show him you like him and are happy he got the job. You should feel free to do with the money as you wish. If it will hurt your friendship if you don't give him some, then heck give him some. Otherwise the money is yours. It's up to you to decide what to do with it. =)

I would if you told him to put you down as a reference. If he did it without your knowledge and didn't know you would get a bonus, I'd say it's up to you. Perhaps you could use some of it to take you both out for a good celebratory dinner.

    Sounds like a bribe.

It will be great to take that friend to lunch. Maybe go shopping or something together.
