Did you give up DANCE classes? (eg: ballet, ballroom, tap, jazz) Regret it, or glad to be out?

I am interested in learning why and when people gave up dance classes, and whether they wished they had continued.

My partner and I went to a weekly dance lesson from January to July this year. There were no breaks between courses which lasted 12 weeks each and we often felt very tired and wished we didn't have to go. Conversely we (or rather I) really did want to learn to dance. If we missed a lesson e.g. through illness, we found ourselves behind the following week. We never got to grips with the basics of the Quickstep but in spite of this, we were taught to do complicated additional steps such as the "scoop and twinkle".

We had nowhere to go to use what we'd learned, and my partner was pathologically shy about being seen dancing. When illness led to us missing two or three weeks we felt there was no point going back. We also didn't feel we were making any more progress. My partner didn't feel confident, after 6 months, to dance any of the dances in public in a social context, whereas I felt happy to dance the waltz, the rumba, the cha cha, the social foxtrot or the jive. I am still keen to keep dancing and want to learn the tango, the Argentine tango and the paso doble. I would also like to master the basics of the quickstep but so far it has defeated us and whenever we try we have to stop after about 90 seconds for a post mortem. We are in our 40s, dancing for the first time, and not really interested in competitions etc. We just want to dance together at parties and hopefully one day at our own wedding.

i danced until i graduated from high school.. cuz when i went to college my dance studio was like 45 minutes away and going 3 times a week would have been a problem for me, so I just stopped. I did tap, jazz and ballet. I also twirled baton (my favorite!). We did have dance classes on campus but it was like taking a college course and it just took up extra time. Also our band teacher didn't want baton-twirlers so I couldn't do that either. But now that im out of college im starting back dance, im taking salsa and will be joining a pro-team soon. excited!! One thing i REALLY want to do also is be on a reggaeton dance team the moves are very hip-hop-ish with a little latin flava

I have gone from one class to the next -- off and on -- for probably up to about 20 years. When I'm not in classes, I am sadder and flabbier than when I am, and I constantly am looking for another class. At one point, it was so important to me, that it was scheduled into my days and other things were scheduled around them. Then other things became more important and now I try toschedule classes when I'm not doing other things. I started with jazz, then ballet, then tap. Social dance has been in there, ethnic dance, dance for musical theare, swing and aerobics

Sweetheart, Rudolph Nureyev, Martha Graham, Misty Copeland, Sabra Johnson, David Zurak, Marquis Cunningham, and Thayne Jasperson all started dancing in their mid and late teens, Thayne started dancing at 21 and he made the top 20 on So You Think You Can Dance.

I quit ballet, and I really, really, really regret it. I was 6 or 7 years old, 8 at the most, and I hate myself for it now. Now I'm 13,want to keep dancing, the teacher that gives beggining classes refuses to teach me, and i don't have the backround to dance with people my age. (The studio I was at then would've given me classes, I'm sure of it, but I moved away, and now I can't find classes.)

I've been dancing ballet ever since I was three, and now I'm en pointe. When I was seven, I stopped for a year, and returned after. It was hard returning, since your body got used to all that stretching and the like ... then you stop. After that I continued with the classes :) Right now I'm thinking of taking up gymnastics. Yeay!

    Yes!

Like all Irish children, I was forced to go to irish dancing lessons [I think all our Mothers wish we were like Michael Flathley!]

I gave up because I despised the woman who thought the lessons.

I dont regret leaving HER lessons but I do wish I could do Irish Dancing, It's a part of the Culture, you know?

I started dancing at age 5 and and stopped my senior year of high school. I don't know why I stopped, but I wish I hadn't because I miss it SO much. I think I'll get back into it eventually. I know I can still hit those switch leaps, and triple turns though.
