Did you know the Bible says the earth is round?
Isaiah 40:22 - It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

If you want to be literal, then this is what that means:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2b...
Bible references: In Isaiah [11:12], Ezekiel [7:2] it states that the Earth has four corners. In Revelation [7:1], four angels were "standing on the four corners of the earth". In Daniel [4:10-11, 20], it refers to seeing to the end of the Earth; and then seeing all kingdoms of the world in Matthew [4:8] and Luke [4:5] (implying a flat, rather than spherical Earth). Revelation [1:7]: "Behold, he is coming with the clouds! Every eye shall see him..."
Others: Deut. 5:8; 13:7; 28:64; 33:17; I Samuel 2:10; Psalms 48:10; 61:2; 65:5; 88(89):11-12; 98:3; 103:3; 104:2-3; 135; Proverbs 17:24; 30:4; Isaiah 5:2; 11:2; Jeremiah 25:33; Job 37:3; Revelation 20:8., Isaiah 40:22; Job 22:14; Amos 9:6; Matthew 24:31.
In short, the cosmology of the Bible draws heavily from the cosmology of the Babylonian and Sumerians. That is, it is basically a picture of a flat earth. (As a side note, this doesn't reflect favorably on the Bible being the word of God. Why would God provide a confusing and most times wrong picture of the Earth and universe? Why would it be a view held by prior civilizations rather than a correct one?)

I like the case where Galileo built a telescope and discovered that the earth and planets revolved about the sun rather than everything revolved around the earth according to Catholic dogma. When Galileo "dared" try to reinterpret the Bible he was punished by the Catholics and placed under house arrest for the rest of his life. There was no way a mere scientist could be more right than the Pope!
Now we come to modern times and a Catholic Priest theorized that the universe was expanding yet Einstein, the Pope of science, believed in a static universe. The expanding universe theory supports the big bang theory, and sort of, supports the Genesis account of God creating the universe by a command. Turns out the Priest was right.
Maybe we would all be better off if religious folks interpreted science, and scientists interpreted scripture. Might help resolve some artificial contradictions between science and religion that so many stumble over.
Dan. 1: 4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
1 Tim. 6: 20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
The Bible does not condemn science at all, only fables offered up in the name of science.

too bad the shape of the earth is closer to an oblate spheroid then, isn't it?
yeah, the jews didn't have a word for trinity either, but some people manage to extract that concept from the text. circles and tent floors are FLAT. as i read it, that verse contains not even a hint that the situation is more complicated than that. it doesn't mean it's totally wrong (many ancient peoples sensibly believed the earth to be flat in the absence of good quality evidence) - it's just not by any means the miraculous knowledge that some people are claiming.

Here are some interesting facts...
"every eye shall see" does sound illogical -- but this is the age of live satellite relays, so that should not be very hard to understand.
Talking about 6 days of creation. If you add to it the complexity that "to the Lord a day is like a 1000 years and a 1000 years like day, then you could go 1000 years * 1000 years. If I go berserk using biblical metaphors such as the number three, then I'd have 1000 yrs * 1000 years * 1000 years, which would be approx 1 billion years, considering 6 days in all for creation that would bring that number up to 6 billion years.Current assumption of the age of the earth? 4.5 billion years. So, looks we are getting there, or should I say, geology is catching up fast.

Sorry, but you're the second person tonight that is trying to convince us that the writers of the Bible knew that the earth is a sphere.
Different words existed in ancient Hebrew for "circle" and "sphere". If they had known that our planet was a sphere... they would have said so.
- NONAMELv 71 decade ago
The whole "flat earth" thing is greatly exaggerated to begin with. The whole idea that people once thought the earth was flat is due more to a popular Bugs Bunny cartoon than it is to actual history. Centuries before the time of Christ, people had already calculated the circumfrance of the earth, and speculated that the sun was the center of the solar system.

Circle and sphere are slightly different.. Regardless, I think the translations are a bit fouled up and it is supposed to mean sphere.. It is not the first text to suggest that the world is a sphere.. But if we were to go into details, the Bible goofs up on a lot of facts..

a flat circle not to be mistaken for a sphere . but that is only one of many ignorant statements made by the book . too bad they didn't say crickets then we could say thou shalt not stridulate . don't spit at any rate don't listen to talking snakes when the rains come pack your plants in baggies and don't take the name of the false god in vain.
