Getting rid of snakes on the property?

We live in a somewhat rural area but keep the place mowed & trimmed. Although I know these are not really dangerous I don't like being supprised by walking up on a SNAKE !@# So far all I've seen are black snakes. I've found them in the garages as well as the yard. I have a small dog and cat, they've both come across them also. I've been alerted by birds raising "cain" that one is in the area of their nest. What can I spread or do short of getting a MONGOOSE ?

Well, if you go to lowes or home improvment there is soemthing called, snake away. It really works!!! Also, use moth balls, I bel;ieve getting moth balls are cheaper, just throw some around your yard, and make sure your pets DO NOT get a hold of them!!! We useds to have snakes, and after we started using mothballs, we only got like a snake a year. hope i helped = ]

Living in a rural area, you will never be snake-free, since you are surrounded by great snake habitat. Keeping your yard neat and tidy will help...you see the snakes. I grew up in southern KY and we had lots of copperheads and rattlesnakes but never in the yard by the house since our chickens considered this their territory. The really did keep the snakes out; I guess because the chickens would make so much noise, the snakes decided to go elsewhere. My mother is terrified of snakes but my dad taught me the types of snakes I would likely see and I have an appreciation of them now.

Well depending on your location, those black snakes are probably "King Snakes" they are harmless (non poisonous) However, they do feed on rattlesnakes. One of the best remedies for getting rid of all snakes is to spread "moth ball" around the perimeter of your house then your yard...
