I know that there is advertisement and TV ads, but how else do the Presidential candidates spend the huge amount of money they need just to run for President?

they also need to spend their money on staffers don't forget. That is part of the reason why John McCain had less than Ron Pual in the bank at one point. They spend so much money hiring people to tell them what to do and fix all their mistakes that it completely drains their assets.
