How long can it take to defragment a computer that has never been defragmented?

I am trying to get my grandparent's computer running faster. I know they have never defragmented their computer in the 10 (?) years that they have had it. How long do you think it could take?

I started defragmenting it about 30 hours ago, and it is still at 1%....is something wrong, or is it just very fragmented?

Update:

I did the disk cleanup and emptied the cookies and temp internet files before beginning....it is now at 4%....and it has been 55 hours!!!!!!!!!!! Ughhh...

If it has not been defragged for 10 years it could take ages.

I would also suggets you go into the filing system and delete all cookies. Then go to local settings and delete temp files and then temp internet files. After all this you could empty your recycle bin. Another thing to do would be to delete all shortcuts on the desktop that are not regularly used. It would then be a good idea to go to accessories and do a disk cleanup and then a defrag.

It could stay at 1% for quite a long time. Mine often does and I defrag it quite regularly.

    Hope this helps

    1% in 30 hours?

It must be really fragmented. I've heard of them taking 24 hours, and even that's a long time. But I suppose anything is possible, especially after 10 years.

I would do what darren said, cancel the defrag, then clear out the temp, cookie, and history files. You might even want to go into their control panel and click on ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS. Get rid of old, unused programs, just be careful what you remove. Some programs are co-dependant on others.

While your at it, download a program called CCleaner (from www.ccleaner.com), it will get rid of alot of useless files easier and faster.

After all that is complete, then run defrag again.

I would cancel the defrag and do a disk cleanup first. Empty the Temporary Internet Files, Temp Files, Cookies, and then go do a defrag. See how that works for you.

    There is something wrong...

Either give up, or, reformat and fully reinstall.

Something 10 years old running Win98 or WinME will really seem slow to kids who have always run faster systems, who are used to running the new systems with faster busses for data transfer!

Buy yourself a new and faster CPU from 3btech, or off of pricewatch.com or from newegg.com and give them your old CPU tower.

Turn theirs into an IPCOP.org firewall.
