Since America is becoming obese, should obesity be considered attractive?

Since the american public is bent on eating itself into an early grave, should we consider the obese attractive as the did in great britain? As our culture is committed to beuty, would it not be smarter for the public to consider the overweight beautiful? I am not one to support this very much as I am a 6 foot 125 pound male with an 8 pack, but if you'll humor me, is this thought not logical?

Maybe if everyone was, we would get used to it...

As others have pointed out, people have risked and still do risk their health for vanity. Victorian women would take small amounts of arsenic to get the prized "pale" look. Only wealthy women could stay inside all day and avoid the sun. People diet and have risky cosmetic surgery to try to attain a nearly impossible beauty ideal. And some people do express concern when a celebrity has gotten too skinny--remember the outrage over "lollipop" women whose heads were too huge for their gaunt bodies? I agree the tanning analogy is a good one, but it's easier to stop tanning--hello, tan in a bottle--than it is to drop a few pounds.

We should not consider it attractive, nor should we consider it ugly, we should consider it unhealthy, which it is! People do not choose to be obese, it's just they do not choose or cannot stick to the difficult work to be thin either. Since you are on the tall/lean side "try to make yourself short/fat" You will find out how impossible it is and how little control we have over our size. It's like telling an ugly guy to get handsome or a handsome guy to get ugly... WE are what God has created us to be, different, we need to learn to be happy with who we are.

Actually no, In ancient times it was though, because being fat was a sign of prosperity, it meant that you had enough money to well... eat well. In our society its the opposite now, if your in really good shape you have the money to buy diet pills, a membership to the gym and the time to work out. (everybody may not do it this way, but that's the preconception)
