What is the difference between salsa and chili sauce?
I have a recipe that calls for chili sauce, but I don't have any in the house. Can I add some ingredients that will make either mild or medium salsa a good substitute?

Chili sauce is really a whole different flavor. It's sweet and vinegary and the spices are different than salsa. Here's a recipe to make your own substitution:
Makes 1 cup:
1 cup tomato sauce, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, dash of ground cloves and dash of allspice

Salsa is primarily raw tomato's, onion, and some sort of chilli pepper, and is usually chunky in texture.... Chili Sauce is made of basically the same ingredients, but also has sugar and vinegar added, and is blended till much smoother and more of a liquid form. Chili sauce does have a sweeter taste with a bite to it.

Most picante sauce I've seen is cooked; it looks red and is thinner with pieces of veggies in it. The best salsa is just chopped fresh veggies, with no sauce added to it- and not cooked.....

Chili sauce is more like catsup with peppers and relish in it. Not spicey like salsa.
