Assuming you are starting with beginners, you should start with greetings and My name is_ What's your name? You could then proceed to discussing health and the weather, naming body parts, objects in the classroom, and Where are you from? I'm from _. You could follow up with basic geography, an introduction to the customs of your country, family members, food names, housing, public tranport, how to access medical care, and so on. Just basic information for how to function in your society.

At the same time I would present basic grammar such as the commonly used verbs in the present tense, word order in statements and questions, personal pronouns, common adjectives and adverbs, and of course pronunciation.

I try to build into every lesson the four basic skills of speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing, although with beginners I would start exclusively with speaking and listening. I ALWAYS present the spoken word first and focus on communcative competency.

Email me if you'd like to discuss lesson plans or any other aspects of teaching!

I live in Ukraine and don't know Ukrainian or Russian. Here are the things I have found most useful to know in a foreign country:

    Please

    Thank you

    You're welcome

    Yes

    No

    I don't understand English

    I understand

    Sorry / Excuse me

    Where is the toilet?

    I need a doctor

    Where is the pharmacy?

    Where is X street?

    The numbers 1-12

    Please write down the cost

Please call a taxi for me

I survive quite well when I am not with my girlfriend (who speaks Russian and Ukrainian) with these simple phrases and a liberal use of pointing and using my fingers for numbers. I ask store clerks to write the total due on paper if they don't have an electronic cash register that displays the total. I keep a map of my hotel or apartment with me to show taxi drivers. I also spent two weeks in Poland two years ago without a translator and managed with these phrases as well.

I don't think there is a "right" approach to this, it is the teacher's prerogative. When I first started taking Spanish, we started with conversation (Hi, How are you?, etc.). Maybe you could also teach them to ask and state where they are from, their name, and other basic information. Ask yourself the 25 words you would need to know in another language if you visited a foreign country.

It is clear that early language and reading ability development passes great benefits to the child as they progress through school at all grades, and that early language and reading problems can lead to learning problems later on in school.
