Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIA

Written by Ernesto on September 25, 2007

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers has allegedly been taken offline by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). Both the tracker and the website have been unresponsive for nearly 24 hours now.

As of now it is still unsure what exactly happened, but the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reports that the CRIA is responsible for the downtime.

TorrentFreak contacted some of the Demonoid administrators, but they are not sure what happened either. It is certainly possible that Demonoid’s Canadian ISP pulled the plug after being pressured by the CRIA. The Demonoid server is still pinging, but the ISP could have firewalled the everything after they received some serious legal threats. Deimos, the founder and the head admin of the site is unreachable and has not responded yet.

This is not the first time Demonoid suffers major downtime due to pressure from the anti-piracy lobby. Demonoid had to move its servers from The Netherlands to Canada in June after The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN filed a subpoena against Demonoid’s ISP. BREIN had asked the ISP to take Demonoid offline and hand over the administrator’s personal details, but Demonoid relocated their servers before any harm was done.

Unfortunately, it now seems that Canada is not the “safe haven” as they expected it to be.

Demonoid tracks over a million .torrent files and is the second largest BitTorrent tracker after The Pirate Bay. The shutdown of the site and tracker is a huge blow for the BitTorrent community that lost 2 of the most popular BitTorrent trackers (TorrentBox was taken offline for US users a few hours ago) within 24 hours.

Unresponsive for almost 2 days now, a Dutch website is reporting that the popular BitTorrent tracker site DEMONOID.COM has been taken down by the Canadian music industry.

According to a Dutch news site, Demonoid has been taken down due to the efforts of the Canadian Recording Industry Association.(CRIA)

There's no word yet on what the cause is, but it's being speculated that it was ISP ad not site admin related.

It was for a similar reason that Demonoid decided to leave the Netherlands for a server host in Canada back in June of this year. The Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN intimidated its ISP enough that it eventually caved in and stopped hosting it.

Now it would seem that the tactic has worked in Canada as well, making the future of Demonoid uncertain at best.

It's down for me as well. I really don't understand people who say Demonoid is not good. I've found nothing better. There has rarely been an occasion that demonoid hasnt had what I'm looking for. I was told that revolutiontt is better but I have had many more issues with revott.

I found a little more here:

Our favorite torrent site is no more, at least for today and tomorrow. Demonoid, the previously fully-private torrent catalog and tracker is down, according to reports at TorrentFreak. Trackers have not been responding for over 24 hours, and the site is completely down. Demonoid was the second largest tracker online, after ThePirateBay, and has seen its fair share of legal threats and takedown notices from copyright holders and associated groups. Demonoid shifted operations from The Netherlands to Canada back in June after their previous ISP balked at legal threats, but it appears that Canada is no safer as the likely cause of the downtime now is the Canadian ISP blocking the website.

Demonoid is only going to be down for a few days caus of legal stuff. It may be hard to live with those few days without demonoid, but most of us can manage.
