Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIA
As of now it is still unsure what exactly happened, but the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reports that the CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) is responsible for the downtime.
TorrentFreak contacted some of the Demonoid administrators, but they are not sure what happened either. It is certainly possible that Demonoid’s Canadian ISP pulled the plug after being pressured by the CRIA. The Demonoid server is still pinging, but the ISP could have firewalled the everything after they received some serious legal threats. Deimos, the founder and the head admin of the site is unreachable and has not responded yet....
This is not the first time Demonoid suffers major downtime due to pressure from the anti-piracy lobby. Demonoid had to move its servers from The Netherlands to Canada in June after The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN filed a subpoena against Demonoid’s ISP. BREIN had asked the ISP to take Demonoid offline and hand over the administrator’s personal details, but Demonoid relocated their servers before any harm was done.
Unfortunately, it now seems that Canada is not the “safe haven” as they expected it to be.
Demonoid tracks over a million .torrent files and is the second largest BitTorrent tracker after The Pirate Bay. The shutdown of the site and tracker is a huge blow for the BitTorrent community that lost 2 of the most popular BitTorrent trackers (TorrentBox was taken offline for US users a few hours ago) within 24 hours.
More info soon!

I'm sure if you have DLed something it's not from the Demonoid tracker. It's URL seems to be down as well. Surely if BREIN were able to shut something like Demonoid down int he past 24 hours there would be some sort of techy newsfeed about it. Someone has to know something.
I haven't caught anything Demonoid related in the blogosphere, but it doesn't, as was already mentioned, seem to be a maintenance issue. (there is now hazy blurry out of focus demon greeting mornful sitegoers)
I hope the issue is resolved soon, for I can't live without The Deemster. I hit up Pirate Bay a bit ago and forgot how much I hated sifting through that mess.
UGHhhhghgh!

A few things about what I've read in this thread to date about Demonoid:
1. There has been no confirmed reports about ANYTHING other than a hardware failure;
2. There is nothing in any newspaper that I am aware of about Demonoid being shut down ... lets face it, it WOULD make the news;
3. Demonoid went down a few months ago for about 4 days. When they eventually got back on line they reported a hardware fault;
4. Yes, you will find that you can still seed and download torrents that you started before the tracker went down.
5. If you have "allow incoming legacy connections" turned on within your torrent software you should be able to continue to seed and download torrents that you have already started, despite the tracker being off line. The caviat empti here is that this will work only while computers remain in contact with each other. Ie: if you shut down tonight with a partial download don't expect to find the torrent active tomorrow;
6. How to preserve active torrents when the tracker is down: Keep your PC on and the software active. Increase the number of connections and decrease your upload speed to 28.8. Decrease the number of upload slots to 4. After you have completed your download SEED it for a REAL LONG TIME ... until no one needs it. This kind of belt tightening will enable everyone to get the download while the tracker is down ... just like you did.
Good luck! Let's hope Demonoid is only doing maintenace and will be back soon.

Yeah, since last night...9/24/07, states the page cannot be displayed. I've always been able to access it. Looks like BREIN finally took them down in Canada. Where are they going to setup now? Columbia? Haha. I tried using http://www.sneak2.net/demonoid.com which is supposed to allow you to access websites that have been blocked by your ISP provider and that didn't help either so demonoid MUST of been taken down, atleast for now. Lets all hope BREIN industry dies from a hurricane or something. ^_^;

Last time it shut down it shut down for something like 2-3months, my guess is that theyre once again relocating their servers which could take from 2 to 10 months, as said, they dont know when they will come back to life. This is my side of the story, they were caught and been filed for illegal internet activity, and are in the middle of a pretty big battle between the good and the bad, and who knows, I dont think they will come back...
