In your opinion, at what age should rabbits no longer be bred?

I raise show rabbits, and have spoken with many different breeders, each having their own opinion of the age which a rabbit should be retired.

I personally believe females should be retired around the age of 2, and no later than the age of three. Others have said to breed her, her whole life. Some claim to stop at 4, or 5, or even 7!

Most people continue breeding males their entire life. I also believe it is best to stop breeding them around the age of 3.

Do you have an opinion on the matter?

This is a difficult question to really give a firm answer. To start I would say that the ages would definitely be different for bucks and does.

Bucks, obviously don't have the "wear and tare" from giving birth and nurturing babies, so I would think that the retirement age would be much later on in life. We had a buck that we used until he was 4. He slowly began to lose the drive to reproduce at that time. So we quit breeding him.

We have used does as old as 3 years old. I would however continue to use a doe if she was being productive beyond this age.

Personally, I think each individual rabbit will tell you when it is no longer interested in having litters. Either they will show no interest in being mated, or they will not conceive. Rather than setting a specific age for your rabbits, maybe you should consider their productivity.

    Just a thought!

I'm not sure,I have a male, and if you raise rabbits you must know that the age different is 5 yrs to humans 1yr.I think it also depends on if you have them for breeding, or for a pet.I was told if they are well taken care of they can live up to 10 or more years.I think your right I would stop at 4 of our years. The rabbit would be 20 yrs their yrs.I got my rabbit when he was 5 months old,In April of next yr In our yrs he will be 10, in his he will be 50.And he is still kicking.
