If the elderly couples' daughter doesn't give you the papers signed and transferred to you for you to then send to AKC with a fee and the information needed to register the dog in your name, then you just cannot do it. You could always get an ILP number from AKC but you could not breed or show the dog in conformation with just an ILP registration. Here is the page the tells you about an ILP registration. http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm

If you want to breed it(which I hope you don't) then you have to get the papers with a signed transfer. If you want to show the dog in companion events in AKC, agility, obedience, herding, tracking, rally obedience, etc. then you can ILP(indefinite listing privilege) the dog by sending in a few pictures and filling out the paperwork. When we looked into transferring the papers on a rehome spayed Border Collie we have it was $65 or we could ILP her for $25. That's craziness!

You must contact the origianl owner in order for that person to tranfer the ownership to you...think of it as a car title...but if there were never any papers...then you can not just go and ask AKC for registration papers...but if you are interested in registering him/her with another group then you might be able to...there are several Pet registries...do a simple google search or here is a link that states this...
"APRI- America’s Pet Registry, CKC-Continental Kennel Club, ACR-American Canine Registry"

You can't get the papers for the dog without having the papers from it's registered parents, if it's parents were registered at all.

You can't. In order to aquire new papers you'd have to have a signed set of the old ones. Sorry.
