WHY do people do this at the gas pump?

When some people fill up their tank, and the pump shuts off at, let's say, $36.54, they go to GREAT lengths to top off their tank at the nice round number of $37.00.

I've never been in a grocery store, and had someone's total reach an odd amount, and see them reach for a pack of gum or a bag of Combos to round off the amount for them.

PLEASE...if you do this at the gas pump, I beg of you to sit down this coming weekend, and re-examine your life.

I do this. Because I have OCD and like beautiful, rounded numbers.

try repositioning the nozzle, maybe by putting it in further, or pulling it out slightly more before pumping. the gas pump has a pressure sensor, that senses the pressure buildup coming from the filler tube. it's supposed to shut off the pump to prevent overflow but sometimes it just goes off easier on some cars.

I think it started because people used to pay with cash more often and didn't want change. Filling up with a meter makes it relatively easy to get a round number. It is much more difficult using packs of gum to get to a whole dollar amount. And the person might not need gum, whereas they will eventually need the extra gas.

I use either CC or DC so I don't worry about it.

I'm a round numbers kind of person...can't help it...besides that way i always recognize the charge on my account, if it's a round number it's a restaurant or gas charge....

i don't do that at the grocery...itd be too hard to find something for the right amount...

i don't need to re-examine my life, it's my one quirk...

    This is so funny!

I do this all the time. I don't really know why. I guess me and all the people that do it like order. We can't stand to see that irritating .54 on the end of our totals.

But what ever the reason, this was a good question.

If you're paying with cash, it's easier to have an even amount so you can plop the money on the counter and not wait for change.Or if you have to pay first with cash, you don't have to go back inside for change. If you're paying with a card, it's ridiculous.

I do that. Its just nice to have an even number for once when balancing your checking account. It only takes a few extra seconds and its easy to do. So what if people want to do that? I think you need to reexamine YOUR life if youre worrying about little things like that! Mind your own business!

I like rounded numbers and I guess that's why I do it. I never honestly thought about it. Sorry if it annoys you!

ummm...I don't know why I do that, I guess I'm used to doing it because when I was learning to drive my mom would make me pump the gas & use her debit card & she always told me to stop it when it's even...I never understand why...I'm gunna quit doing that.

I did that when I had a car but I never thought about why.

I think people who do this have OCD. It's odd, but it doesn't annoy me.

Wow -- PLEASE tell me where I can fill up my tank for $36.54. It usually costs me about $50.54!
