Is there a hand held minigun in use by the army??

I want to know if it is, why would they need that much supression in iraqi? It seem's like a lot of door to door right now !!

Update:

I would love to see a photo of one !!

There has been experimentation's with making a mini-gun more like a SAW. But the mini-gun is powered externally, so dragging around a 1000 mile extension cord is out. Next would be the ammunition requirements for such a weapon. Those guns are fed with 4400 round magazines. How many of those do you think you can carry? Finally, the gun itself is too cumbersome. It's heavy, the recoil would be uncontrollable and the torque would spin you like a top. You would wind up hosing your own guys! Something I am sure they would not appreciate. Jesse Ventura and Arnold Schwarzenegger used hand held mini guns just for Hollywood. But they are not practical for squad use unless in a supporting role and the weapon is mounted on some sort of platform.

They are sure as hell fun to watch when they are fired. Especially at night!

I am a mini-gun freak and they are available to the public for about 80 grand. I see one for sale in Shotgun News everyonce in a while. Once you get the gun, you have to power it and feed it. At 6000 rounds per minute it can get very expensive (though FUN!) to operate one. Then you have to tear it apart to clean it and put it back together to store it. You Tube has some great videos of mini guns at work. Check 'em out and be glad that you aren't a bad guy on the receiving end of one of those things!

This link is to a web site to a guy who is a true minigun freak. Some good photos, etc there.

  • Nope! The closest thing to a mini-gun that can be held is a SAW or Squad Automatic Weapon and it's nothing like a mini-gun. It has a really high rate of fire though and is just a bit too cumbersome to give much if any advantage over an M-16 (especially a carbine) in a close-quarters battle. An automatic shotgun is an even better choice in a lot of people's opinion.

The high rate of fire on weapons like a SAW or mini-gun usually makes them better at area suppression than anything else and usually require a support to keep accuracy.

A mini-gun would just be too inaccurate and cumbersome if hand-held even for Rambo to be effective with it.

Yes there are but there would be a battery that goes into the top part of the backpack feed system to power the Minigun, the wire goes from the battery to the side of the Minigun, and the reason how I know this is because I had to use one back in the military

  • Contrary to what movies and video games may suggest, there are no real hand-held mini guns in existence.

    - Firstly, mini guns are simply too heavy and bulky to be carried and used practically

    - The fact they need external power to rotate the barrels makes them impractical to carry around

    - The amount of ammunition you can stuff in a backpack would only last seconds when put through a mini gun

    - The recoil from firing a burst would likely knock you down

They're usually mounted on vehicles and aircraft and used for close defence or supporting the infantry.
