Homecoming Dress Advice [my first homecoming please help]?

I'm a junior, and I'm hoping to go to my homecoming this year, it will be my first one. What do I wear? I'm hoping to find something cheap, so I'm going to look at thrift stores first, is that a bad thing? like what would you think of your friend (guys: girlfriend) if her dress came from a thrift shop?

Also, what style do I get? I'm thinking a strapless or spagetti strap styled dress that comes to about or above my knees, but I don't know how fancy you're supposed to go, and my school has a themed homecoming, does that make it fancier?

Any dress advice? I'm about 5'6", I'm not fat by any means, but I weigh 140, and I'm not extremely skinny, and I always have thought that my shoulders seem kinda wide-looking. What would look good on me, while also being in style w/ everyone else? and can it come from a thrift shop? Please help me!!!!

Update:

also, if you can find pictures of what you're talking about (just ideas), it'd be really helpful. Does it have to be sold as a homecoming dress, or can it just be regular dress?

ok first off sweety, with a thrift store you are granteed that you wont have the embrassement of someone else having the same dress and a thrift store makes a good store to tell as well.

a black dress first off is classic and can go with any occasion. if not black then i suggest a solid color, patterns might draw more attention to places you dont want attention. A halter dress would probably be a good choice for you and halter dresses makes your arms look thinner and cut as well. i wouldnt go with strapless because dancing around it sucks to have to pull your dress up over and over again spagetti straps may draw attention too so i wouldnt go with that . and because its just a homecoming dance do not go with a long dress something shorty knee to right above the knee. nothing to short or too long. another type is to have earrings and a braclet or necklace and a big ring. it balances you out.

    hoped i helped

here are some examples as well....

Going to Homecoming will be really fun!!! For your dress strapless would look nice but if you do go with straps get some wider than a spaghetti strap. And go just about knee length ... no floor length dresses !!!! And go for a dress that is fitted on your rib cage and then flows out. This will flatter you the most.

    Heres some stores:

    Thrift store if you want

    Windsor

    Macy's

Davids Bridal (prom) or Special occasion dresses.

  • Don't get strapless if you have broad shoulders. It will only make them look bigger! And spagetti straps, everyones eyes automatically go for the shoulders. There is this one store that has really cute dresses like the cheapest dresses they have is like $40 and you could go to

    www.debshops.com

they are so cute! you should prolly go for a shorter dress it wil show off your legs.

And it is not bad that you will be loking at thrift stores first. Some ppl are just strapped for money.

Or you could look around on the internet. Or go to your local mall. Just have fun and look around.

I like both dresses! But with the body type you described, I would suggest wearing the second one. One shoulder dresses look better on girls with big chests more than a strapless dress would. It also compliments the shoes a lot! Have fun!
