What I learned (albeit awhile ago) was that the open was a normal delivery of going from the tank to the carburetor or injection system and into the cylinders.

Closed was used on high pressure injection systems as the fuel pump operates continuous at high pressure and under low fuel demand the excess was rerouted back to the tank. This of course was warm fuel being returned. Most modern diesel engines use this.

Open loop systems have no feedback. So a open loop example would be an older mechanical fuel management system. Whereas a modern electronically controlled engine management systems with sensors give feedback to maintain/correct fuel use and emission levels.

Open Loop where fuel is constantly pumped from the fuel tank to the carb/injectors, and what is not used is returned back to the fuel tank via a return line.

Closed loop where a carefully 'dosed' amount of fuel is fed, on demand, to the engine by the fuel pump. The amount fed by the pump has been electronically calculated and hence used up 100%.

Open loop is where the engine runs from setting carried out from some body doing these ajustments on a tune up.

Closed loop is where the engine management listens to information from all the sensors on the engine the ajusts the air fuel ratio to keep it running to the correct emissions designed for that engine

A closed loop equipment is one that controls it,s output by way of monitoring its output. including receiving tips from sensors and the E C U making the mandatory adjustments as required. An open loop equipment would not administration it,s output by way of monitoring it,s output which became the way in the past desktops have been presented into automobiles
