your computer can't tell you if it has a virus or not. there must be some program that does this. if it's your antivirus or antispyware then it should show you and option to delete/remove/erase the virus.
if you only see annoying pop-ups that say you have a virus and you should download something, then your computer is infected with advertising program. to delete this annoying thing you should run your antispyware and antivirus softwares and delete everything that shows up after scan.
if you don't use security programs, you can download free anti spyware here: http://www.2-spyware.com/compare2.php

Might not be a virus - it might be Spyware trying to get you to click on it and divert you to a scamming website.
Go here
www.spybot.com and download Spybot Search & Destroy - it's free - install and run it and let it search.
Also, go here http://www.emsisoft.com/en/ download the FREE A Squared Free version - this will deep scan the PC for all the little buggers that hide in your PC

Where is it telling you that you have a virus?
If it's from an Internet explorer pop up then it's just a site that's trying to sell you its anti-virus software. If that's the case, you probably have spyware so downloading Adaware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.... to remove the spyware will help.
If not from a pop up, then go to http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and do an online scan which may turn up something your anti-virus software has missed.
