Is it safe to give my 50 lb. Irish Setter aspirin for joint pain? If so, how much?

She's 8 yrs. old and seems to have trouble going up and down stairs, and getting up from a laying position.

Go into an enclosed room (usually a bathroom) where there aren't any windows, so there won't be flying glass. Pull something heavy (like a mattress) over yourself. If it's a really bad storm, even that might not work. People who are outside should NOT get into an automobile to try to outrun the storm. Get into a ditch that's below ground level. Don't get close to where there are electrical lines, or near a building that is in the path of the storm. Remember that tornadoes go from northeast to southwest. If you get caught in a building, raise the windows a crack to equalize the pressure. Stay away from rooms that have windows, because flying glass is deadly. I live in Dallas, and this time of year is really scary for everyone from TX all the way north to MN. If the sky looks yellow or green, we start taking cover. I rode out a tornado in 1976 that blew the back end off our house. All three children (who were quite small at the time) and I were in the bathroom in the tub, covered with a mattress we had dragged off a bed. It literally sounded as if a train was roaring right next to us. Thank goodness no one was hurt.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aU8UY

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

You can give it Aspirin, but this shouldn't be a permanent fix to the problem because Aspirin is not good used daily for animals or humans. Also, make sure you do NOT use enteric coated Aspirin because there have been cases where the dogs do not react well to it.

You can give your dog 3/4 of an adult Aspirin pill every 12 hours or if it's baby Aspirin give him 3 pills every 12 years- these being 240mg.

Also, you should go to the vet and have them prescribe Metacam to your dog. This helps dogs with joint pain greatly and is not expensive.

PetSmart also carries some great supplements for arthitis in dogs. Do not buy anything made by Hartz though as their products have been linked to numerous deaths.

Not really. Don't do is unless you are desperate and can only afford that or nothing. She should really be on a dog-specific medication like Rimadyl.

It is safe to give glucosimine with chondroitin. Find it in any pharmacy.

At 50 lbs, give 1/2 a baby asperin once a day for two weeks and see how she does.

If I were you, I'd give her Glucosemin-Chondrotinin (sp). You can get it at your local pet store. Glucosemin-Chondrotinin helps to lubricate the joints. A friend of mine who only adopts older dogs, sweats by this stuff. You should notice improvement in about one week or so. You can give her baby aspirin for a short period of time, until the other stuff kicks in, but I would only give her 1/2 of a baby aspirin 2x daily.

    Good Luck!

    Household Medications for pets

The following is a list of common household human medications that can be used on pets. These Medications can be especially useful if you can't reach a veterinarian.

    http://animalsunlimited.net/pftd00%7Bimage0%7D.gif

So according to this chart it would be safe to give your dog 250 mg of aspirin - I would confirm this with a vet first though just to be safe.

When my rottweiler was a puppy, he had growing pains in his legs that caused him to limp a lot. Both my breeder and vet advised me to give him Baby-buffered Aspirin, not regular adult Aspirin. Baby Motrin is even better.

You can also give her glucosamine, which is for arthritic joins and will actually help it and not just mask the pain. And, it completely safe for dogs since it's is something that is naturally found in cartilage.

Also, swimming is great exercise for arthritis since it isn't at all harsh on the actual joint, but strengthens the muscle around the joints.

I used to give my 7 year old 57lb dog one 81mil coated aspirin a day until I found Joint Maintenance by Hartz. She seems to be responding better to this although I am not giving her the full amount recommended, she gets one a day with food, as it seemed to upset her stomach as much as the aspirin did.I found it in the pet section with the supplements at Walmart but I'm sure it is sold in any pet store.

Hope this helps you and your canine friend.
