I am doing a sociology paper about how the role of women has changed over the years. Can you help me?

Do you know of a good book that I could use for research?

Try reading on the life and works of Maria Montessori. During her time, it was a no-no for females to become a doctor. She fought that tradition headstrong and has proven herself to be a capable and deserving physician like any man her time.

Also, in this day and age, there are numerous woman leaders, presidents of countries. You can check on the archives of Time Magazine.

Basically, role shifts have been a constant change in our society. Women nowadays, due to globalization, have more job opportunities where they now become bread winners of their families. Moreover, there have been an increasing rate/trend of househusbands. Women now do jobs that men before have been exclusively doing such as driving, forklifting, welding, etc. This indeed is one manifestation of the role shift of women these days.

Alot of women wanted to keep their jobs they acquired during world war 2 and did not want to go back to staying at home. Most men then wanted their wives to stay at home and live off his money alone (even if he made 25 cents an hour) without any complaint what so ever. Remember all eligible healthy men went to war then. Women filled their jobs, no matter what job, and found out they could do it, no matter what job it was Men changed after the war too. Young guys who had never been off the farm suddenly found themselves in Paris, London, etc. Like the old, old, old song says "How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen paree?"

  • There are tons of books on the subject so you don't have to re-invent the wheel. Furthermore, as you probably know, the primary change in the roles are probably their large contribution to the labor force, the reduction of time spent raising families as their primary objective and their elevated status as leaders of society especially in the past in the past 30 to 40 years or so.
