Foreign Exchange Programs??? Help!?

Hello, i was a foreign exchange student when i was 16 and also a junior in highschool( I went to Mexico). The best advice i could give you is RESEARCH! I went through a group called YFU...Youth For Understanding (YFU) is a non-profit educational organization which offers opportunities for young people around the world to spend a summer, semester or year with a host family in another culture.

For me they were great. The reason i chose them was because at my school we had several students who came here with them. They provide housing with a host family which is included in tuition as well as your airfare there and back and a few other things like an orientation.

There is a place on their website where you can request a free brochure and it has info on costs of programs and a brief overview of each country they offer.

Also check with your local high school about getting credit for going... well in advance of when you plan to go.

BUT don't limit yourself to the Net! Go to your public library, or to Amazon.com if your public library stinks. There are several good reference books that give detailed information on available foreign exchange programs. There are also ads in The Nation magazine, the NY Times magazine (included in the Sunday edition) and probably other mags as well. Also, make your guidance counselor work on this -- that's what they get paid for, innit?

Your desire for this kind of learning is BEAUTIFUL IMO. I'm an old geezer now but I was lucky enough to work overseas. It is a wonderful experience to spend some time in another country, and probably more valuable now than ever. Go for it! Probably involves paperwork, interviews and payment, but it'll be a hell of a lot of fun and value.
