Do you think that there is a difference between Lord of the Rings fandom (Ringers) and Star Trek (Trekkies?)?
I regularly attend Ringcon in Germany. I love Lord of the Rings in written form and also have a place in my heart for the films. The same company that runs Ringcon also runs Fedcon - a scifi convention aimed at Trekkies.
I have never held the two in close match - would never have considered attending Fedcon as "trekkies were geeks". But many LOTR fans attending Ringcon dress up now..............
I'm not one for dressing as an elf or orc, much prefere hearing the lectures and guest talks......but are Ringers in the same league as Trekkies???

the only deference is the costume, if you think the trekkies are geeks, then the ringers are right there with them

I have noticed that the people who sneer at Trekkies also seem to be able to quote all the books chapter and verse. I used to read quite a lot of Star Trek years ago when I ran out of other reading. There is nothing wrong with competently written action/adventure. There are other books if you want more depth of character or complex motivations. These days there is so much truly excellent SF/Fantasy available via Amazon I have to be more selective.
Dressing up is just one of the activities at larger cons. Many mainstream people like dressing up too. Costume parties, carnivals, and Renaissance Faires are not just for the fen. Others people enjoy researching and crafting costumes. The fancy dress parade is awesome to watch and if some want to run around the con in costume it just adds to the ambiance. Manufacturers at trade shows often send people in costume to walk around the show. Generally it raises a smile and makes people think positively about their company

I share you approach - I find that I can extract a fair deal of philosophical and ethical material from LOTR (and I've also used StarTrek to pose questions) However, Id not want to dress up...
Hmm this LOTR dressing up is not that new, when I was at Uni .. 30 yrs ago there was a short lived but robust fashion to do exactly that...
Funnily enough we also had a contingent of Knotters (Sealed Knot) ... I wonder if the Student union were prepared for a possible fight twixt Elves and Roundheads... My money would have been on the Roundheads

anybody desires some thing to have faith in whether it rather is an all-powerful being sitting in a great chair reviewing a itemizing of deeds dedicated by way of humanity or the prospect that our movements today will create a greater applicable destiny. Even Atheists do volunteer artwork for charities and hospitals so as that they too attempt to help in making issues greater applicable; in the event that they did no longer have faith their movements could make a distinction they does not be doing it. God, the destiny as promised during the basis of action picture star Trek or a basically a blind faith that people can do greater applicable; it somewhat is all style of an analogous element interior the tip. we would desire to have faith our lives have meaning. P.S. The term favorite by way of unique followers is actual Trekkers, i've got been one considering that i became 5 years previous and the coach enable me think of there became some thing greater applicable accessible than what I observed daily.

I am not into this particular way of escaping the unpleasant reality of modern life. But my knee jerk reaction is although one is fantasy and the other SF, surely the Ring series is for youngsters, Star Trek for adults?
