I would water it once a day in the evening until the seed germinates, then every other day until it is ready to mow. The grass seed is near the surface of the soil, so you have to keep the surface moist for good seed germination. You probably will not need to water for an hour if you water daily. Once the soil is moist down deeper it is only the surface you need to keep wet. A light fertilizer application at the time of seeding, and again after germination will bring the grass up quickly.

when the peat moss dries, repeat watering until the seed germinates which takes about 11 days depending on the warmth of the sun. Do not flood it or the seeds will wash away. After you see the grass coming up it is important not to let go for more then a day. Then you can water it in the mornings and evenings. It is better to plant a lawn in September or March, because it allows the grass to be starting just before the rains come. It takes about 3 weeks before your 1st mowing. You cannot plant in the summer and before the 1st frost.

a newly sodded or seeded lawn should be watered for 30 days This promotes the grass root system to grow better. Most likely watering for 30 minutes should be sufficient for 1/2 inch of water.

You will need to keep the seeds moist by watering each day. If your weather is cooling down, it won't take too long to do this each day as the soil will not dry out quickly.

You should see green growth in just a few days, but you still need to keep it moist. Your dogs should not be allowed to walk over the young grass.

About twice a week when it doesn't rain, keep it moist but not soggy. In the summer water it either in the early morning or night, otherwise the sun will heat the water in the ground and your plants will wilt on you. :D Hope that helps!

Goodluck and congrats on the new lawn!

    *** Hello. I'm a Certified Master Gardener. ***

Leave the water on for 10 minutes in the morning, and 10 minutes in the afternoon, every other day.

This will encourage germination of the seeds.

An hour may rot the seeds, done more than once.

It should be watered often enough to keep it constantly moist but never enough to cause pooling or running water. Pooling or running water will move your seed into the low spots and leave the high spots barren.
