Why do people put different values on different sins?

My opinion is people put different values on sin because they are trying to justify their actions. All sin separates you from God. Jesus hung on the cross for all our sin. I pray some who read this will understand it's not about rules but about you willing to know your creator. God spoke about a time when people did CONTINUES EVIL, please learn from our earlier mistakes.

Is stealing a piece of bubble gum from a store the same as murdering a child? Is lying about how someone looks in a new set of clothes the same raping someone?

Some 'sins' take away another persons free will and others don't. Some 'sins' are more abhorrent than others and I pity anyone who can't understand that.

Some sins are mortal others are not. It is in the Bible.

"If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death [this is the sin which we Catholics call mortal sin]. I am not saying he should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death [this is the sin which we Catholics call venial sin]." - 1 John 5:16-17 (NIV)

Simply put, all sin is an offense against God because it sets itself against God's love for us and turns our hearts away from Him. Mortal sin is a grave violation of God's law and destroys charity in the heart of man. Mortal sin is not capable of being forgiven through any power within the soul itself, a special intervention by God is required (much like the human body which, once it dies, can only be resurrected by God). This is why Catholics have the Sacrament of Reconciliation (penance/confession); so that God can again become sacramentally present and active in our lives. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must all be met: the object must be a grave matter, it must be committed with full knowledge, and it must be committed with deliberate consent.

Venial sin allows charity to subsist, even though it offends and wounds it. The term "venial" comes from the Latin word venia which means pardon. This term is applied to less than mortal sin because the soul has a vital principle that allows a cure from within (much like a diseased or sick body which fights off the invasion and recovers).

There are only three types of sin:

1 Sin that we inherited from Adam & Eve

2 Willful sin

3 Sin against the Holy Spirit.

The first one is covered by Jesus death or by dying. The second one, you must genuiely repent and change your wicked ways to obtain forgiveness, and the third one is unforgiveable.

That scripture doesnt say that we should all look at sin to the same degree.

Would you punish a person that illegally downloaded a few songs the same way you would punish someone that robbed a bank with a gun?

Why does sin even exist in the first place?

Is it because Adam and Eve were nitwits or because God set the scene for their downfall? Would sin even exist if there was never an order to disobey?

Greg, I don't mean to come down hard on you, but what you said is exactly the reason, why so many here at R&S condem the Christian belief! Are you speaking with the love of Jesus, or your OWN feelings?

I believe that according to the Qur'aan and sunnah music is haraam. and that the hijab is compulsory. and that Ribaa is of course haraam like you said. even if there is any doubt in your mind, you should always keep this hadith in your head: Leave that about which you are in doubt for that about which you are in no doubt. The Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam, elaborated further by saying: “Verily, truth is tranquillity and falsehood is doubt.” This means that the truth will lead to tranquillity and falsehood will lead to doubt.

now to answer your question.

people put different values on different sins because there are different values on different crimes. lying and saying that you ate ice cream when you really didnt, in most people's opinion is no where near as bad as raping someone. both are sins, yet anyone but the most extremely devout christian would consider the lie to have less value than the raping.

most people, i think, compare sins to crimes. they base their thoughts of sins with their thoughts of crimes, in my opinion.
