Death penalty in Australia?

I am curious that John Howard would say that he thought it would be very bad if the Bali Bombers did NOT get the death penalty for their actions.

If he believes in it, for other countries, why doesnt he try to reinstate it in Australia? Maybe there should be a referendum on the subject? Why we should feed and clothe, serial killers/rapists, pedophiles, at the taxpayers expense is beyond me.

I'm not condoning hanging or painful deaths...just sleeping pill with lethal injection. It would not be for revenge, simply a removal of a person that can never be socialised or let out of prison again. With the DNA testing these days, the likelihood of getting the wrong perpetrator is far less likely (which is why they stopped it, too many wrongful deaths?).

You have a good point... but i think howard either made a mistake or he actually does believe in the death penalty but does not believe that he can change the law to make it legal in Australia.

He could instate a referendum but, i don't think that he would win, 'human rights' seem to be too popular and set against the death penalty.

I agree with your point that evil ppl should be.. put down.. but Australian politicians have different things on their minds it seems.

Death penalty should be reinstated because it prevents the commission of heinous crimes. It is the proper penalty for grave offenses instead of life imprisonment. Death penalty will come into play in the mind of a person who is intending to commit a crime. Thus, death penalty should be revived.

No thanks. I like living in a civilised nation in which we don't kill for revenge or pragmatic reasons. It doesn't matter how accurate the prosecutions are - it's just ancient and barbaric and we, as civilised people in the modern world, do not do it. They should just do hard labour all their lives to pay for their own very basic upkeep.

The death penalty doesn't work as a deterrent to martyrs and people who feel like they have nothing to lose anyhow - maybe hard labour would be a more effective deterrent and give the victims' families more satisfaction in knowing how long and hard the perpetrator is suffering for their crimes.

John Howard is just being a scummy vote grabber - trying to score points out of exploiting people's fears and emotions during the 5 year Bali bombing anniversary.

    EDIT:

please see here about the "martyrs" factor:

I am all for the death penalty. It should be introduced to all countries. Today its easy to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt your guilt, or innocence for that matter. Really bad evil people should not be allowed the privilege to live.
