Last month, I surfed for some rentals at the websites of Alamo/National/Budget only because I have used them before when returning to the East Coast. Most of the rental costs were about the same.
Out of curiosity I went to carrentals.com and got an Alamo rental from the same location that I have done previously for about $ 75.00 less than the rental company's website.
That's about all I can say about online vs. in person. Also, the cost of renting can depend up on what state you live in. When visiting my brother in Rhode Island, he rents a car in his name and lets me use his for the time I am there. When a RI resident rents a car, they do not have to pay all the airport and other taxes. So if you are visiting relatives, have them check out the taxing situation are their local airport.
Good luck! Hope this has been of some help.

for me the best way is you will rent a car personally because you don't know if they are not telling you the truth. at least if in person you can remember his-her face when in times of trouble.
