Can I gain significant muscle mass in 2 months?
I'm 5'8" and 125lbs. I want to gain more muscle and began lifting weights with some friends about a month ago. We've been going about 2-4 times a week. I'm thinking about getting Whey protein but haven't bought it yet.
Is it possible for me to gain significant muscle (visually) in 2 months (by Dec 15ish)? What can I do to optimize my chances of gaining muscle?

Increase overall food intake (including but not limited to protein). You need to overfeed yourself every day. If you aren't gaining 1 - 2 lbs a week, you aren't doing something right.
Regarding training, work on compound movements only. Lifts like bench press, dips, barbell rows, chinups, et cetera. Keep your workouts short but work hard. Train only 3x a week at most. Get plenty of rest. Muscles can only grow when you rest.
A good whey protein powder is all you need, though you might want to consider a good multivitamin. Most of your nutrition should come from lots of good food.
Good luck to you.

You will see some changes sure, but nothing big in 2 months.
The body under OPTIMAL diet and routine conditions can only produce .5 pounds of muscle a week.
To gain muscle, your body needs to be a in calorie surplus.
f you are trying to add muscle mass, you need to be in a calorie surplus (unless you are a genetic freak). I find mostly men think the gym and the iron are the all mighty when it comes to adding size and packing on the muscle. These things are nothing without the proper nutrition! I see guys train their arses off day in and day out, yet never respond to anything. They are doing everything fundamentally right. Yet, they are not eating properly at all, and this will kill any progress you should/could be achieving. Don't waste your time in the gym by limiting your results through laziness in the kitchen.

Of course. Eat lots of protein and work out.

My suggestion would be to increase your intensity by doing high reps and moderate weight.
