Which planet is it?

When I left for home yesterday morning I saw a really bright star which I know is a planet, however I'm just not sure which one it is, it's been a while since I have done anything with astronomy, I am guessing that it is Venus with the time of year, the color, and the brightness of it. can anyone else confirm this? It's in the east around 6 am

Update:

Oh yes, I would like you to list a web site of the current star chart too please. Thanks.

Venus would be the bright one.

Lots of web sites with star charts are available. Try the one below.

Download the latest version of Google Earth. It now has the "Google Sky" option enabled, and this also includes a little widget to show where the planets are located at the current time or any other time for that matter (the planets are not show as picture since the star fields are pictures that usually do not have any plantes showing, but as cartoon figures, but that is good enough to show the locations). If you know your way around the constallation and can track which direction you were looking, you will see which planet would have been there.

It could have been either Mercury or Venus. Im guessing more than likely Venus since Mercury isnt as bright as Venus.

This site will let you chose the part of the sky in which you would like to view. Have fun!

From Earth the brightest natural bodies in space in order of brightest first:-

    Sun

    Moon

    Venus

    Mars

    Jupiter

(At certain times of the year Jupiter can outshine Mars)

What you saw in the sky was certainly Venus!
