Dog vacation ideas?

Does anyone have any ideas for a vacation on the East Coast with a nervous dog - one who can't be left alone in a hotel room, bc he will howl the place down and disturb the other guests?

I need a vacation, live in NYC, but my puppy isn't ready for a kennel so have to bring him with us. HELP!

P.S. flying with puppy is out of the question...

Update:

To clarify: I'm looking for IDEAS on where to go - not solutions as to what to do with my dog.

Dog is coming with us. I don't have anyone who I can leave him with for two weeks. All I'm asking for are ideas/ recommendations on where to go WITH my dog.

Come to Maine. The Old Port section of Portland is VERY, dog friendly. Lot's of excellent restaurants and a lot of outdoor seating which makes it really fun for the dogs. You also will get great food, lot's of shops and restaurants, tons of walking trails along the coastline in the area, beaches to play on. It's absolutely perfect for a dog vacation. The drive, which will likely be 6-8 hours depending on traffic, has lot's of good, safe areas to stop at as well and there are a lot of options for visiting places on the way.

I think it's great that you'll take your puppy with you and plan your vacation to accomodate him. How else will he learn new things and perhaps calm down a bit?

It all kinda depends on how far you're willing to travel. Dogs love the beach and the lake. Those 2 locations can have rentals that are more off to themselves than a hotel where other people wouldn't be a worry. The best vacation I ever took with my dog was Florida. She loved it! Rent a cabin or a condo if you can.

Try the outer banks in NC around Duck. Many of the rentals allow you to bring your dog. Many of the beaches allow dogs - some beaches require leashes during the summer months but others don't. You can make it to the outer banks in one day from NYC but if you want to do it in 2 days and plan to stay in a hotel, I would suggest getting some tranqs from the Vet.

And learn how to teach your dog not to be so nervous. The earlier the better.

Here is a place in the Berkshires that is pet friendly - even has a package for dog owners! This time of year you should be able to see the fall colors, but not drive too far with a dog in the car.

well, that is a big problem. do you have any friends or family that can watch your puppy? If not i would try talking to your vet about it maybe there is some kindof medication you can give the puppy to keep it calm not trancalize it or anything but to keep it from flipping out and keeping you from having a good time in NYC. But, maybe the vet can help with some ideas or something. That is their job anyways lol. Hope i help somewhat. kristy

I would say camping is your best bet. Most dogs LOVE to camp and hike. mine sure do. Plus its nice to be out in the open to let your dogs run and romp! Research some campgrounds in your area. It will be a ton of fun I promise!

I do not know the area - what about renting a caravan or some other type of self catering dwelling we have had many enjoyable holidays with our dog

Our dogs LOVE the beach. When we take our dogs on vacation they go everywhere we go, and wait in the car (we don't travel when its hot) if we go out to eat or something.

Here's one link to try for ideas

Its good of you to think of your dog and to not want to fly. Enjoy!

YOu need a vaction? YOu work for a living? Your dog needs neither. Prioritize your own life and find a sitter, enjoy yourself. The puppy will not bring back any memories.
