Grateful Dead Listeners, do you also listen to any jazz? Just curious.?
If so, what jazz guys do you listen to, and did the Dead lead you to jazz or did jazz lead you to the Dead?
PS-Have you ever heard the show from Feb. or 1993 that has Ornnette Coleman sitting in for some of the second set?

yeah, i love both jazz and the dead's music. i prolly listened to the dead first, but it's more like my interests led me to both, rather than one listening to the other.
and i was at one of the shows with ornette, it was at the oakland coliseum in california. ornette's band opened, and jerry played the last couple songs with them, and ornette joined the dead for the 2nd half of the 2nd set.
when jerry played with ornette's band it was sublime, jerry was really happy and his playing fit perfectly with what the others were doing.
i could go on and on about the similarities between the genres, including time signatures, improvisation and dissonance.

I was a jazz fan long before I ever got into the Dead, but I love both about equally now. I got big into Phish around 1990 and kinda found the Dead through them.
As for jazz guys, I like the classic Miles Davis bands from all eras and Coltrane's early/mid 60's work. Being a guitarist, I also like a lot of Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, Allan Holdsworth, and more modern stuff.
I've never heard the shows with Ornette, but the ones with Branford Marsalis are pretty amazing. Especially 3.29.90.
