Three month old Puppy is 99% 'paper trained' - but only for peeing! We can't get her to poop on the paper!

My mom's long haired toy chihuahua goes to pee on her paper or puppy training pad pretty much every time she's got to pee, but she never goes to it to poop. She poops in other spots all throughout the house instead. We got a suggestion to pick up her poop and leave it on the paper for the scent but that didn't work, she just continued to pee on the paper but poop elsewhere in the house whenever she gets a chance.

Can anyone provide any suggestions with how to get her to poop on her 'bathroom' spot as regularly as she pees there?

She is a strictly indoor dog, so we are not looking for tips on getting her to pee outside - we just want her to pee on her designated potty pad inside the house.

this is relatively easy. next time she poops, rub some of it on the clean weewee pad. just a dab mind you, just to get its scent on the paper. next time she visits the pad to pee, she'll smell her own poop on it and get the idea that all things potty she'll need to do on the pad. you might want to keep some poop handy at all times to smear a new pad, until she gets the idea and does it consistently. not entirely sanitary, i know, but it's pretty foolproof for me.

oh, and make sure you erase all traces of her poop from your house. not just cleaning them with soap or Lysol or bleach, okay? you need to use a special pet deodorizer/cleaner with enzymes to break down the scent itself. unless you completely eliminate the old scent, your dog will continue to eliminate there - just because the scent is her "prompt" or "cue" of where to relieve herself.

    hope this helps.

Get rid of the paper - it only encourages the dog to go inside the house.

First and foremost, when you cannot watch the dog, i.e., at night or when you are not home, the dog needs to be confined to a crate or very small area. A dog will not soil their “home”, as they don’t want to be near it, either!

As soon as you get home, or when you get up in the morning, put the dog on leash, and walk them outside to a spot where you want them to go. Always go to the same area. This will become their potty spot, and will make things a lot easier for clean up. As you go outside with them, tell them to “go potty”. They will soon learn what this means, which will help in the long run.

As soon as they go outside where they are supposed to, a lot of praise, petting, and an occasional treat. This will reinforce that you are happy with them. Do this praise immediately, as a dog’s attention span is very short and if you wait, they will be happy you are praising them, but they will not know why you are praising them.

If the dog makes a mistake and goes in the house –

If you are there and see them start to go, tell them “no” in a firm voice, immediately take them outside to their potty spot.

If you do not see them actually in the act, then do nothing. Scolding the dog after the fact will not teach them, as they will not remember what they did and will not know why you are angry.

Do not give the dog food or water within 2 hours of bed time.

Get the dog on a schedule as soon as possible for feeding and potty times. The dog’s internal system will soon learn this schedule and they will be able to wait until their scheduled time.

I would tape a large section of puppy pads together. You know how dogs walk in circles for ever. And get her scent on one of those and see if she'll go on the ones taped next to it.

You could place a few scattered around the designated potty area.

Paper preparation is fullyyt meant to be a non everlasting component til they get all their pictures. you are able to start taking them outdoors now and as long as they're not paper educated, it truly is going to be a lot less stressful. effective reinforcement and treats each and every time they bypass and quickly so that they understand they did sturdy. Have u tried crate preparation? it type of feels to paintings nicely, a minimum of for me. sturdy success.
