Long haired toy chihuahua owners - how often do you bathe your puppy?
My mom bathes her long haired toy chihuahua all the time, and recently the receptionist at the vet told her she should be getting a bath a maximum of once a month. Mom doesn't think this is right and bathes her once a day or once every two days so that the dog will smell nice and not 'like a dog'. (This is her first indoor pet and she's absolutely in love with her). However, she does use Johnson's baby shampoo and not a pet shampoo to bathe her, figuring that it's gentle enough for newborn humans so the dog should not suffer any ill effects?
She wants to hear thoughts from other long haired toy chihuahua owners, if possible. Thank you.

Actually it is true, the dog should not be being bathed like a human. This will lead to skin problems with due time. As a professional bather/groomer I see this a lot with people coming in asking us to help them get their dogs skin condition in check. If she enjoys bathing her pup have her do it no more then every two weeks. Instead of a baby shampoo try a formula that is made for pets, preferably with oatmeal. Also to make sure the pups skin does not dry out from regular washing use an oil rinse on the dog. You can get information on this in a magazine with pet products, or possibly at a local pet store like PetsMart etc. Also with the regular baths make sure water does not get into the ears, try cotton balls stuffed in while bathing. Good Luck!

I like to bathe my indoor dog every 2 weeks. I use lavender puppy shampoo and oatmeal bath.
Just be sure to not dry the dogs skin out from too many baths. Brushing the hair and stuff everyday is great but every day washing is too much.
My grandma has a long haired lapsa whatever it's called and washes it every week or so. And brushes her often.

NO don't bathe it every day if you love her it will get sick and get congestion their neck will be all not letting her head turn and make weird noises with the throat and might die!
She should do what the vet says that's why they are vets oh and tell her to get good smelling dog shampoo because its for dogs and stronger than Johnson's on dogs though

I have a long haired Chihuahua and he gets bathed maybe once every couple of months. He stays clean even considering his white coat. Washing every day will dry out their skin.

A long haired dog? My dog is like that. We bathe him about twice a week. A Japanese Spitz is my dog, he has long hair and he is white. He bathes 2 times in a week because a Japanese Spitz cleans itself my licking himself.

I've had mine both ways too... but my husband prefers it short... he in no way complains when I grow it lengthy, but is always all over himself w/the complements when I cut that off
