yes it is better. It will lower the ammonia in the tank. this will help you to maintain the PH level

most products in pet shops are to enance the manufactures and shop keepers pocket.
go to the pet shop talk to other customers
owners tend to give you all the facts you need but biased towards the most expensive products.
