As someone pointed out, they are a legume. Botanically they are a seed. Each peanut 'fruit' has two seeds inside a grey husk.

Boiled they are like any bean, roasted they are crunchy.
They grow on a plant that looks like a green bean plant.

They are grown from a plant and flower below the stalk and form towards and under the soil so you can harvest them but keep the plant for further production. when harvest they are toxic thats why they then dry them to eliminate the toxen
