A bit confused about the BCS?

I've followed College Football for 15 years or so. I know that everyone complains and hates the BCS, and some even want a playoff.

What I don't understand is why the BCS results are pretty much the same as the other polls. It seems to me that by the BCS, the AP, USA and Harris all being so close that even the people voting are all using the same guidelines.

So my question is, based on these facts, how would getting rid of the BCS make the NCAAF rankings better?

The reality is that the BCS had it right the first time. In fact, they were too good and the only that dragged them down was the fact they had to factor in the AP and coaches poll into the overall formula, which put them out of whack.

Then there was the big stink raised over the 'margin of victory' ingredient, which was actually the original recipe's strongest ingredient.

Once they pulled that out, the BCS poll becomes not worth the paper it's written on.

If money matters then none of the popular opinion polls are authorative. Those polls (AP, Coaches, BCS etc.) are self serving polls who's voters/designers have conflicting agendas that have nothing to do with a fair or accurate ranking of college football teams.

When money is on the line, Las Vegas oddsmakers use gambling specific Power Ratings like the BGS Power Ratings (link below), making those the most authorative Ratings for my money!

The BCS system rewards teams that play powderpuff schools like I-AA Apalachia State and go undefeated.

Take Ohio State, for example. Most likely OSU will go undefeated because they play nobody and will be untested at the end of the year. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for them, yet with Freshman players, they are still able to stay at the top of the rankings. Compare this to the PAC-10 or SEC and schools in these conferences are tearing each other apart against other good teams and getting penalized for it!

What can happen is Ohio State will either A. play an even weaker powderpuff team and beat them easily or B. play a truely good team that managed to survive this bastardized system and get slaughtered... which is exactly what happened last year when they played Florida!

Is it possible that OSU is as good as their ranking? Absolutely. The problem is, no computer or human poll knows how good they really are until they are truly tested against the top teams in the country. How many of those pollsters saw every team play, let alone every game of the season? How can they predict with perfect accuracy who the #1 is? That ranking shouldn't be a "guess" that gets decided with the last game of the season. "Oops we were wrong! We will change the formulas for next season..."

The computer component of the BCS also punishes teams unconditionally for human factors such as a team losing because of injuries or bad calls (i.e. Cal with it's second string QB, USC's QB playing with a broken finger, Auburn missing their TB). With the current system, 1 loss and your season can be over.

The BCS is controlled by moneygrubbing tycoons that keep the little guys out of the top game. Even if two teams outside the major conferences go undefeated, only one of them is guaranteed a bowl game! Also, even if Notre Dame loses their conference, they automatically are granted a BCS bid if they are ranked in the top 8! Teams with conference title games can even lose their conference game and make it to the national title game (see Oklahoma vs USC c.2005)

Also, a playoff system will generate even more revenue, because every regular season game will be important and every playoff game is important, but a playoff system still forgives losses for human reasons. If my team has one loss and no chance at the championship, why should I bother watching anymore? Who cares about the Tire Bowl or the San Diego freakin Co. Credit Union bowl or the Toilet Bowl? It has never been about revenue or ratings or doing it for the players' interest. The problem is about changing the established powers and making them share the wealth.

The only true way to crown a champion is to let them go head to head in a playoff and see who comes out victorious. Let the people decide who the top 16 teams are - then let fate sort out our champion. This is Spartaaa! Right now, this is BS.

The BCS is a joke. For accurate Ratings I use the BGS Power Ratings, found right here on Yahoo!
