WHY was the battle of Pea Ridge fought?

I don't need the outcome (The battle would decide whether Missouri would remain in the Union or would join the Confederacy)... I sort of need to know the reason that actually STARTED the battle.

By the time of the battle the Union Army had successfully pushed the Confederate Army out Missouri.

By the spring of 1862, Union Brigadier General Samuel R. Curtis determined to pursue the Confederates back into Arkansas with his Army of the Southwest.

Confederate Major General Earl Van Dorn was aware of the Union movements into Arkansas and was intent on destroying Curtis's Army of the Southwest and reopening the gateway into Missouri.

So basically, the Confederacy wanted back into Missouri and the Union wanted to continue to push the Rebels back into Arkansas and eventually capture Southern state capital of Little Rock and firmly claim Missouri as a Union state.
