How should i descale my kettle?

Any proprietary descaler will do - just make sure you boil it to the top and throw the water away at least threee times!!

I kept a kettle in the utility room when little one was having bottles. It was only boiled once a day for his milk making - whereas the one in the kitchen is boiled lord only knows how many times!! Kept the scale down on his kettle!! We live in a dreadful hard water area - descale mine about once a week.

I live in a hard water area. I descaled my kettle with a descaler that i brought in the supermarket every couple of weeks. I just made sure that the descaler was removed by boiling the kettle up a few times. (I think the packet said about 1 time but i did it about 3!).

When he was about 5 months i started to use Evian water because it has the low sodium from other bottled water and all other European countries use it from birth.

I noticed that my son has been getting so ill since using Evian.

The answers above are correct. However I would recommend starting with a cold kettle of water and give it a good brush out with a washing up brush first. This will remove a fair amount of chalky. If you have a filter in the spout - remove this while you do the decaling and put it in the kettle when the vinegar has cold a bit. I found that this method was excellent and points to note are safety. You are dealing with boiling water/vinegar. What will happen is that the mixture will fizz up in side the kettle - do not do this operation in a position where you could cause damage to your kitchen - or leave the kettle unattended. When you start, have a Pyrex jug or similar handy - then you can use this to keep the vinegar in if you need to have several stabs that the job. The main advantage of using vinegar is that you can use it to clean the outside of the kettle as well by using a brush and a hot rather than boiling mixture. If you do this say once a month the kettle will not scale up as bad and it will be quicker next time.

We live in a very hard water area too and descale our kettle once a month. We buy descaler from the supermarket, all brands work and your kettle is beautiful inside afterwards!

Sorry about the scale. Fortunately where I live we have very good water that hardly forms scale on kettles. I however learnt from high school that acid is good for descaling. Hydrochloric acid but it is very corrosive so I suggest you ask your nearby chemist what type of acid will be safe for descaling a kettle and how u should handle it. Good luck

Buy some kettle descaler from the supermarket or make a vinegar solution.

Vinegar - we also live with very hard water - soak with vinegar, then add water and boil. You will be able then to get all the scale off.

But in general if you just use a Britta filter and make bottles that should be fine - I used tap, filtered, anything. Don't worry about boiling the water for the bottles, if you are in the US we have a safe water supply (unless a main breaks - which happened when I had an infant - THAT was a whole different story...)

Last thing at night, fill the kettle and pop in a Steradent tablet - the things used for soak-cleaning false teeth.

Leave overnight, then rinse out thoroughly in the morning before use.

I would suggest you investigate either the "Brita" water softeners, or look on QVC for one of the devices for removing and preventing scale, to reduce the problem more long-term.

Vinegar. Fill up kettle add some vinegar (I also use a squeeze of lemon juice) boil kettle. Rinse out and then fill up and boil again, empty again and then use as normal.
