Laptop & Internet without Landline?

I want to buy a laptop and get on the internet at home. But I dont have a landline and cant get one. Its a rented house and Im not allowed.

Is there anyway I get on the internet (without going through my mobile) I know some companies have wireless broadband etc, but dont you have to be in a "hotspot" to use it, like in Starbucks etc?

Im in the UK.

Update:

My issue about connecting to the net. Not whether or not my landlord will let me have a landline!! Im only at the property for 6 months, and if I got a landline I would have to sign a 12 month contract, therefore having to pay for a landline for 6 months when I dont even live there!

Soon some companies will be taking the old analogue towers and broadcasting wireless internet but you would have to pay for it in bills

If you don't have home phone and don't wish to use a mobile then no you cannot get internet at home unless your next door neighbours have wirless and will let you connect to theirs for a small fee

the cheapest thing to do is use the existing landline as near as possible. buy a wireless router and get a broadband plan. As long as its not to far from you you should be able to pick it up.

You don't have to sign a 12 month contract at all as you can get both pay as you go broadband and broadband that is on paid for on a month by month basis with no minimum contract length. Alternatively you can look for an ISP that provides broadband via satellite - but for God's sake get a phone installed and shop around for a good ISP that has flexibility http://www.ispreview.co.uk/ http://www.reviewcentre.com/products443.html http://www.thinkbroadband.com/

Your landlord wont let you get a landline??? how stupid is that! I would wonder why? Did you ask him? Tell him you need a landline to have a phone in your house... just don't tell him you just want it for the internet... that's none of his business anyways... The fact that he won't let you get one, would be of great concern as to his intent behind the refusal. Seek landlord tenate association (in your area) attention to your problem.

Depends on where you live. If I take my wireless-enabled laptop to my seaside apartment, I can log on to the internet because three people living nearby have no security on their networks.
