Rose of Sharon blooms on new wood, so prune the plants in the winter while they are dormant. They will put on new growth in the spring and buds will develop on that new growth.

I usually prune mine in October or March. I love Rose of Sharon's because you can shape them into a bush or a tree shape. I have one in my back yard that I prune about 3 feet from the ground and it looks like a tree.

Mine just finished blooming, too, and I plan to prune them back this weekend. I'm in zone 9 and we don't usually get hard freezes. But the answerer is right above, they do bloom on new wood so you can prune them anytime during the late fall or winter while they are dormant.
