What car did Steve McQueen drive in the movie "Bullitt"?

steve mcqueen drove a 1968 mustang fastback. a gt model as i recall with the 390/4spd combination. the suspension was modified by mcqueen, and in order to get the tires to squeal going around corners, they had to lower the tire pressure.

the other car was a 1968 or 69 dodge charger, rt i think. i dont remember what powered the charger, likely the 440/927 automatic combination.

Actually, there were *TWO* Mustangs and two Dodge Chargers used for the famous chase scene.

And Bid Ekins drove the Mustangs for the bulk of the stunts. You can tell who was driving by the interior mirror. Steve McQueen had the mirror up (visible) and Ekins had the mirror down (not seen).

Bullitt's reverse burnout during the chase scene actually wasn't in the script--Steve McQueen had mistakenly missed the turn. The footage was still kept, though.

Both of the Dodges and one of the Mustangs were junked after the filming. The other less banged-up Mustang was purchased by a WB employee after all production and post-production was completed. The car ended up in New Jersey a few years later, where Steve McQueen attempted to buy it. The owner refused to sell, and the car now sits in a barn and has not been driven in many years.
