They have a three day cancellation policy, but if it was last week, it sounds like that time has expired. If you've got automatic draft set up, see if they will allow you to cancel the draft and do payments in person at the gym. (But don't tell them you got laid off.) Probably the worst that will happen if they let you do that is they won't let you use the gym when you don't pay the bill. (And I did mean don't pay the bill, you've got more important things to pay for.) Hopefully you will find a job within a couple of months, then you can just get the payments up to date and start using the gym. OR... if they won't stop the automatic draft, go to your bank and see if you can have them decline any automatic drafts so it will not be paid. Same situation, you can just pay what is overdue after you get a job. Good luck, been in the same situation, only mine was month to month, so I was allowed to cancel when I got laid off.

You can try to do it a couple of different ways.

1. Tell them you are moving out of the area and can no longer go to this gym. Generally, this is enough to get you out of it. However, some of the gyms are getting smarter and require you to provide proof of the move.

2. Get your doctor to basically write you a medical excuse.

If neither of those work, see if they will put your membership on hold for a couple of months. You won't get out of it, but at least you won't have to worry about the payments until you get another job.

But what ever you do be sure to get it all in writing. Gyms are notorious for turning you over to collections and trying to get their money.

depends on the type of gym, if its local, you may be able to discuss with the gym manager your situation--have any proof you can that you were laid off.

either way talk to the manager, because maybe there is something you can work out.

otherwise, if you cant pay your fees, it will go down on your credit report as a serious delinquency as reported by the gym.

or try to get another job if possible.

you may not be able to break it unless they agree to because you are laid off, or they may agree to put it on hold until you get back to work. you need to talk to them and see if you can work something out with them.

Maybe your state has buyer remorse laws .

Call the department of consumer affairs and find out .
