I am brushing up on my high-school French in the hopes of eventually travelling to French-speaking Africa and even France. I would like to be tell people what my ethnicity is if I am ever asked.

Well, you could say, "je suis un américain d'origine africaine" it would explain both your origin and your nationality.

In slang, we use the english word "black" which is not offending .

or we say "Africains" which is bit stilty

If you're going to Africa as a comedian it is a good one. Otherwise forget it. Just tell them you are American. If you're black, I think they will know.
