Do people with Dyslexia have the right to ask questions on Y!A without insults about spelling?

Only, I've seen plenty of answers that are simply rude comments on the questioner's spelling.

I have an aversion to Txt Msg splng; but should people who can't spell, expect the answers to be about their question and not about their spelling?

Update:

I have a dyslexic friend. She can't use spell-checkers as she can't work out what word to change it to. Neither can she use a dictionary because she frequently doesn't know what letter the word starts with (eg Train sounds like it starts Ch).

The answer should always refer to the questions... People should be careful not to mix dumb people with dyslexic people...I have dyslexia & it can be very embarissing when people don't read the content of what you have written & just harp on about your spelling!...I feel for your friend but it is just something she has to tackle by her self...it is verry hard to learn from others. I have only improved myself due to my own determination to do the basic things in life...like complete a cross word... dose that sound silly?

I agree about the text message spelling. Unfortunately it is contagious and a few interns have tried to send me official e-mails with that spelling! Being told to redo the e-mail usually is enough.

I also feel that some are just too lazy to check spelling even though it is the best way to get CLEAR communication across. I don't feel the number of these I have seen, (around 40%) are all dyslexic. Some of the questioners think people are mind readers and very often provide little detail (model numbers). If a question is unclear I look at the profile, see how many questions they have answered (because this is not a one way street and everyone has an area they can contribute to).

So if I don't like what I see I IGNORE the question. If they come back with a better formed question I will answer it. I never insult the spelling. I also am a bad speller, I have found the included spell checker to be helpful, but who doesn't have a basic word processor in the computer.

So in short if you are Dyslexic take courage I overcame a learning disability, you can too. All you others out there who have no excuse please if you want to be understood, don't text message spell, and be clear about what you want with as much detail as you can think of. You have almost unlimited space to make it clear exactly what you want to know!

My husband has double honours in finance and economics and is a CMA by trade, yet has difficulty spelling. I, on the other hand, am not really good at math, yet I am an excellent speller. While I agree that the spellchecker is an excellent tool, it doesn't fix all spelling errors (such as where, when it should be were, etc) but it would certainly get the question in a position where it could be better understood.

Everyone has their forte, and for many spelling isn't one of them. I once went out with a man who was dyslexic and his spelling was atrocious, but once he used a spell checker, his emails could be better understood. That's just been my experience. I choose to never judge a book by it's cover, just because the spelling is bad, doesn't mean the person asking is stupid.

Well I don't see why you can't answer the question as well. Even if you are going to comment on the spelling. The thing that gets me is there is a little thing called CHECK SPELLING right there. Why not use it? Anyway I usually don't comment on people's spelling if it is just misspelled words. We all do it at times. I comment when it is LAZY SPELLING, like txt msg is. Then I just make a comment about it in the same lazy English to get a point across. It actually bothers me to try to read it when people use Ebonics and that type of crap.

Actually spelling ON HERE is a sign of your intelligence. We don't know you. You are judged on your appearance. If you can't spell, or use spell check, you look like you aren't smart.

Anyone, even those with dyslexia have the right to ask and answer questions, but I don't think anybody has the RIGHT to not be insulted.

I don't spell so well myself, but I spend the extra few seconds to check my spelling before hitting the submit button. I even use a dictionary from time to time.

I'm not trying to be insulting, it's just a pride thing for me. But if someone wants to be taken seriously, spelling does matter.

I have seen a lot of rude answers too. It's like the answerers forget that there is a human being asking the questions. I don't think people would be nearly as rude in person when they couldn't disassociate the question from the asker.

To answer your question, of course people with dyslexia have the right to not be berated for their spelling. Even the people who just aren't very good spellers don't deserve this.

Of course not...just because one person is proficient at math does not mean that everyone else should be on the same level as them, but in a forum where you are trying to get an accurate answer, you need to write as accurate of a question as possible in the proper language of the person you are hoping to be addressing. It's polite to use the spell checker above and hope for the best after that. Take Care.-Rachel.

I think the majority of people are just trying to take short cuts as w/ texting. I certainly would think it was cruel to make rude comments about someones spelling if they, Indeed HAVE Dyslexia. There was a piece on the News not too long along, that School teachers (including college students! ) were driving the teachers Crazy because of the "text spelling". The texting generation is the Future Generation of our country, hopefully the majority really CAN spell properly when it is necessary. What ever did we without "spell checking"?

I agree but how do you know who has dyslexia and who are just too plain lazy to use spell check?

It's a computer, there's absolutley no way to tell who has dyslexia and who doesn't.

I don't think anybody on here should be insulted because of their spelling, but w/e I guess people wanna be mean.

Yes they do have the right, and the spell checker only helps people who are able to spell, or recognize the correct spelling when they see it

Intelligent people should realize that and not assume that all they have to do is press spell checker to get the correct spelling.

However I have on occasion answered an apparent spelling mistake, which meant something other than what they meant to ask, as if that was their intended question. So I am not without guilt.
