The guy who answered first doesnt know what he is talking about! Wilmington, while not as large as Raleigh is probably one of the fastest growing cities in the state, next to Charlotte, and is already the largest city in eastern North Carolina. The prices for rent in Wilmington are relative to proximity to Downtown and the Beach, there are deals to be found, but you have to look. Raleigh's rent will be higher but like Wilmington, if you are able to get away from the downtown, and university area, you will find more affordable housing. Best of Luck!

realtor.com has LOTS of suggestions!
By the way ... Wilmington is small town USA right on the waterways of the NC coastline. Raleigh is a hustling, bustling, up-and-coming city. Apartments in Wilmington will be MUCH rarer, because the city is much smaller. Just about everything in Raleigh will be more expensive!
If you are interested in the western part of the state at all then Asheville is your small-town option (at the foothills of the smokey mountains) and Charlotte is your large city option. Although, Asheville is WAY more expensive than Wilmington and I'm guessing Raleigh is more expensive than Charlotte.
