Our Culture vs Western Culture?
I noticed that some foreigners are asking about the availability of Western series of stores like McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts, Virgin Mega Stores, Starbucks, ... etc. Some of us, Egyptians, proudly answer that yeah we do have them as a sign of being a modern country and as a reason for them to accept us.
Come on guys, why should we do that. I mean shouldn't we be proud of our own series and point them out and hold it with the same amount of pride as a sign of being strong in our own culture. That would be much better.
P.S.
I have been around these Western series of stores and never been interested to go in. I still prefer the LOCAL stores.

I kind of agree. It's very important being proud of our own culture and everything but I dont see why prefering shopping at an international store to a local one would be demeaning to our country. I think its a matter of preference. I dont always prefere western series.. I personally believe that Amo Husny makes the best burger hands down!! lol.. but at the same time if I wanna shop for clothes for instance I wouldnt dare walk in one of the weird looking stores in down town for instance.. I prefere stores like hollister or mango..
Plus when foreigners ask questions such as.. is there a so and so western store in egypt? I'm obligated to answer them with yes or no because thats what they specifically asked for.. If I'm going to a foreign country I'd like to know that my favorite store is open there.. it adds to the comfort of my stay.. but that doesnt mean I wont check out the local areas.
When my cousins visit from England I tell them there's a burger king but I take them to Husny's joint!! If they're in for a real good time they'd better mingle with the locals or else they wouldnt feel like they're in a different country.. if they stay in starbucks 24/7 like they do in their own country then why come here?!.. they need to feeeeel the real egypt.. I take them to elborsa's.. but still.. its nice for them to know that if they dont like local places they can still have their cup of coffee in their favorite western store.. this should add to egyptian culture not take away from it! Diversity is interesting and variety is the spice of life!
Cheers!

Meh... I didn't like the integration of Spiritual and Scientific beliefs in the Western Philosophy side... you would have to break it down further to truly analyze anything... For example... Under "Search for Truth & Fundamental Research," it says that Western Philosophy (A Term which Encompasses both Christianity and Atheism in this Article), believes, "The truth needs to be proven. The philosophic base for and culture of fundamental research is stronger." However, isn't this the point (Among other points) where Christians and Atheist tend to differ? I don't see this as a very accurate depiction of Western Philosophy while it Includes Spirituality AND Scientific Analysis under one Philosophy...

I absolutely agree with you!You should be proud and not worry about what others think. Mc Donald's is just a burger joint that you could easily do with out. We have the same problem in the States .A group called Liberal Democrats. They try to impress every one but they are so full of sh*t and all they do is whine ,complain ,raise taxes and screw every thing up!

We should differentiate between loving to go to western series of stores and having the western culture, they may be related but not necessarily that if one goes to western stores, then are not proud of our culture.
btw, I love to go to our local ones more than going to western ones.

i prefer local ones too salah..but you can't blame those who preferred the other because of good quality(like virgin mega stores, where u can find anything u want by a click of a button, everything is here and organized, where can u find that anywhere?)....it's not only about bragging, take it from a girl who dnt have Mc Donald's in her city..hehehhehe
anyway, when a foreigner asks about my city i tell him about the local restaurants specially sea foods ones..
and how is having a western series is a sign of modernization?..hehehe...

Honestly, I hate those places. I shop local too, and I'm from a state in the U.S. that practically lives off of Wal-Mart.
And I agree with you. People should take more pride in their own culture.

i totaly agree with what you are saying. that globalisation has led to the loss of culture in many countrys and that you should be prowd of your local produse.
