I think it's high time to get over speculating about this. Readers and critics have always found it worthwhile to ponder the "back stories" of fictional characters. The Potter series isn't great literature - great plot lines, maybe - so the author has introduced a back story to compensate for the fact that at the end of the series, nobody has yet found depth in any of the characters.

There is some inkling of this in DH, where Rita Skeeter talks about devoting a chapter in her book about Dumbledore to the Dumbledore/Harry relationship. This is not to say that there was anything improper--but that JKR did put out a hint.

There aren't any that I can remember but I havn't read them in a while. I have to re-read, I have wondered if he was because there are thing said that seem out of place. like in one book Dumbledore says he has never blushed so much since Professor Sprout complamented his ear muffs. and just little things like that because it just sounded odd.

But no there are no passages that say such. It is mentioned in Deadly Hollows, Skitter says something when talking about her book. She said something about the relationship between Dumbledore and Harry, referring to it as "unhealthy, even sinister". (pg 27) also "unnatural interest in Potter" (p 26 DH). It is just all about how you interpert the passages. And I don't understand why everyone is so up-in-arms about Dumbledore beign gay. If Rowling says she wrote him to be gay, then he is. she should know he is her character. Does it really matter if he is? Are you not going to like him know because he is gay? Just think about it, maybe that is why she didn't say he was gay til after the last book came out, so people could make their minds up about how the felt about him before saying anything. Kind of reminds me of real life.

Dumbledore isnt gay in a sexual way, as im sure you know the books never even touch on subjects of strait or gay. JK Rowling didnt win the nobel peace prize and she isnt some genious literary scholar. She wrote some great stories. The books are nothing to be dissected, they have no hidden meaning...they are just stories that you can look at in an allegory sense but they were not written that way, The narnia books were written as an allegory of God and Jesus and faith and such as CS Lewis wanted them to be. JK Rowlings wrote stories. Thats it, no deeper meaning. To humanize the characters isnt something you can do, everyone has their own opinions and for her to try and say this and that about different characters is completely irrelevant.

Dumbledore's friendship with Grindelwald must have been a bit too deep. That is the only hint other than lack of mention of wives/girlfriends.

I think J. K. should have let it be. There are many great men who were either gay or celibate. The majority of them are actually celibates, but THAT is less accepted than being gay.

Accepting JK Rowling's statement that Dumbledore is gay flies in the face of most critical theory since the introduction of "New Criticism." If we are going to believe it, it must be in the text. Hemingway can say that Jake Barnes lost his penis and not his testicles, but, if he didn't support that in the text, we are free to believe as we wish. Similarly, if the Harry Potter books don't portray Dumbledore as gay then how can we just take Rowling's word for it? We can't.

It doesn't. The 7 books on my shelf are not JK Rowling's. They are mine, and all the characters are exactly like I want them to be. Dumbledore is not gay. plain and simple.
