How is the weater in August? Is it in the middle of winter and how cold does it get?

Perfect for much of Australia but you could get cold down south . You will be very cold and possibly wet in New Zealand

August is winter here in Aust and NZ (just about coming to spring - but can still be quite cold)
I am in Australia so I can't tell you much about NZ
How cold? depends on where in Australia will you be going.
If you are going to be in the top half of the continent then it will be warm to hot (tropical) as you move towards the equator.
The snow field is in the south eastern part of the country. Snow = cold!

With New Zealand it really depends if you go to the north island or the south island, its still quite cold in august, most of the ski fields are still open all over the country
In Australia it will be hotter than NZ

August is a great time to visit Australia...esp northern areas of Qld, NT, and WA where it's warm up there in the tropics!
Southern areas are likely to be cold and in some areas experience snow.
Cant speak for NZ as I've never been there.
Cheers :)
