Why is it that?

... you are told to walk, not run, towards an exit sign in a building, in case of an emergency, the picture you see above all emergency exits has a diagram of someone running?

Have I missed something?

Update:

The instructions you are given are very explicit. Do not run.

Update 2:

If your in my way, that will soon change!

I'm sorry I don't know you but I want to live. Bad etiquette, I know. I'm just looking after number one, you understand?

Update 3:

Masgtai, I like the Swiss' take on it. There's a Monty Python sketch in there somewhere!

You're right. I think it's because in a fire there's going to be smoke and you can't see if there's anything on the floor to trip up on... if you fall over whilst walking you'll be more likely to be able to stand up and make your escape than if you're running hell for leather and knock yourself out!

Incidentally, Swiss fire exit signs are the same... except the image they carry has a bloke running with his arms on fire.

You're told to walk, not run, so that you don't trample anyone on the way out. The sign is really more of a "quick walk" than a flat-out run.

Lol that is so true - besides if there is a raging fire who in their right mind will want to walk - I know it is the right thing to do because of people getting injured but it is instinct to just leg it

if you have a silly running style, too many people may be overcome with laughter and they may fail to get out of the building on time.
